“BMS World Vision Short-term Volunteer”

"I'm currently surviving my 2nd Balkan winter - last year I was here in Kosova for a 5 month short term placement with BMS.  I came back in Jan to begin a mid-term placement, again with BMS.  The first 6 months will be language training and then I'm back in Britain for some more training at the International Missions College.  I'm continuing to  help in the special needs class in the local school and doing home visits twice a week so there's plenty opportunity to put into practice the language that I'm learning!  My other challenges in these 6 months,

We are proud of our close links with Scripture Union.  Many of our young people are enthusiastic SU campers with Blaithwaite being a particular favourite.  Several of our number volunteer regularly to be group leaders at camps and school groups.  Two or three very special people have been known to cook at camp too!!

Speak to David White if you are interested in finding out more about our international links with SU - in particular the Ukraine.

Tearfund is a Christian relief and development agency working with a global network of local churches to help eradicate poverty. Their ten-year vision is to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches. The widespread support within Dumfries Baptist Church for Tearfund's work  has continued for more than 20 years.

The Third Drumlanrig Tearfund Challenge took place on 3rd May organized by local Tearfund supporters, led by Rolf Buwert and David Moss. Over 200 cyclists from various parts of the UK turned out to take part in 40 mile or 82 mile routes that took them through Upper Nithsdale in near perfect cycling weather. Over £7000 was raised.

apart from language are; learning to drive Kosovar style and learning to run a house here - paying bills is a complicated and time consuming process!  Longer term I hope to continue working with children with disabilities and improving services for them and their families and also to support a missionary family I work with here who are in invovled in a Community Health and Development Programme."

Latest news  May 2009

Hello from a very sunny Kosova.  I’ve just spent a very happy and busy week introducing my cousin who was here visiting, to the families and friends I know here.  It was also a good time to reflect as I shared with her what has been happening over the past few months.  She was a good support to me over the weekend too, as we went away overnight with 3 local girls.  I feel these friendships have really developed and I see God at work in each of their lives.

Last week I had the joy of delivering a lot of clothes, shoes, toiletries and toys to one of the families I support.  A lady in America had sent them over with an American team who were visiting - God has supplied their needs at just the right time.  I am in a routine of taking toys and books for the families to work with and leaving them for a week for the families to continue to work with children.  This seems to be working well - the children are always excited to see what I have in my bag!

God has answered your prayers for my confidence and safety in driving here, more than I could have imagined possible!  I am happy with the progress I’m making in the language studies and have seen God open doors for relationships and work through these as only He can.

My team leaders are back in American just now for 6 weeks and although we miss them we continue to be supported here.

Please pray that over the next 7 weeks, I would see further development in my language skills - I want to complete a course in the local dialect which I abandoned earlier as it was just adding to my confusion!  Also, that God  would guard the relationships that He has given me here and that He would cause the seeds He has planted to grow.

Many thanks for your prayers.

With love

Eileen
